Arti San Toi, The Barras, Glasgow

In June I took a much needed trip to Glasgow, as I’ve been drawn to the city ever since falling in love with Limmy, Alasdair Grey and Ivor Cutler.

I went with the aim of finding out more about the people and psychology of the city, armed with my Zoom to grab field recordings.

One night, I’m walking through the (at the time) deserted Barras in the East End, and get speaking to a guy called Sebastian. I ask him “What’s going on here?” as there was a sense that something is happening nearby; the whole atmosphere of the place was simmering, and there was a dissonance between the posh pavements and the shop shutters down everywhere.

He tells me he’s an artist with a studio nearby, so I ask him about the attitude of the locals towards such an obvious signifier of gentrification. He tells me I should ask them myself, and leads me to a gallery called the Arti San Toi, and I get speaking to Charlie and Gary there that evening.

They invite me back to film them the next day, and the video below is the result of that.
